If you notice damage to your braces, such as issues with the wires, bands, or brackets, it’s essential to see your orthodontist quickly. While not all damage causes immediate pain, prompt attention can prevent complications.

Causes of Brace Damage:

  • Eating hard foods
  • Facial trauma
  • Chewing non-food items

Common Orthodontic Emergencies:

  • Loose Brackets: If the bracket and archwire move, the adhesive might have failed. You can temporarily position the bracket and use orthodontic wax. However, consult your orthodontist for a permanent fix.
  • Loose Bands: Metal rings around teeth that become loose need quick attention to prevent decay. If a band comes off, save it and call your orthodontist without trying to reattach it yourself.
  • Broken Wires: If a broken archwire is causing discomfort, try repositioning the wire with tweezers or covering the end with orthodontic wax.

If any orthodontic piece is swallowed, although usually harmless, consult your orthodontist for guidance.
