When you first get braces, it’s common to experience some tenderness or soreness as your mouth adjusts to the appliances. This discomfort is typically due to the teeth beginning to shift, causing inflammation around the periodontal ligaments and nerves.
Easing Orthodontic Soreness at Home:
Wax Application: Apply orthodontic relief wax to any part of the braces causing irritation. This acts as a buffer between your braces and the inside of your mouth, reducing friction and soreness.
Salt Water Rinses: Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe inflamed gums and cheeks. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in half a cup of lukewarm water and swish it around your mouth for a minute before spitting it out.
Chewing Soft Foods: Chewing soft foods like apple slices, cheese, or celery can help relieve discomfort by compressing and pumping fluid out of the swollen periodontal ligaments.
Eat Berries: Berries are rich in antioxidants and have natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce swelling and soreness in the mouth.
Pain Medication: For those who find the soreness particularly bothersome, over-the-counter pain relievers can offer temporary relief.
Discomfort from orthodontic adjustments typically lessens within a few days. However, if the soreness persists or becomes unbearable, don’t hesitate to contact your orthodontist for advice and possible solutions.
